主要开展淡水底栖生物生态集群分析、水生动物物种鉴定及物种自动识别鉴定、水环境监测与评价以及沉积物亚化石分析等研究。先后主持国家基金3项、省部级基金2项，已发表SCI论文50余篇，其中第一作者或通讯作者论文23篇，出版了著作《中国湖泊摇蚊幼虫亚化石》一部。基于10年多的积累，已初步构建了华南地区淡水底栖动物样本库，发现并描述30多个新物种，并将国内专业领域记录的物种数提高了15%。曾主讲三门本科生课程（流域生态学、河流生物监测技术、水生生物学基础（底栖动物部分））、两门硕士生课程（河流生态学、淡水生物监测），已培养10名硕士和12名本科生（部分境外深造）。热心社会服务及公众科普，担任广东省疾控中心专业委员会理事；多次开展珠江流域水生态监测技术服务培训，2014年主持了首届中国摇蚊与水生态学研讨会（The First Workshop on Chironomidology and Aquatic Ecology in China），2020年开通个人主持的“摇蚊世界”微信公众号。并担任《Ecological Indicators》《Aquatic Insects》《Diversity》《Zootaxa》等多个SCI期刊的审稿人。
